It’s pretty much common knowledge employers are clumsy and sometimes bungling when it comes to selecting the right employee. They go through a stack of resumes and they kid themselves into thinking this is the right way to go about getting at who to call in for the face-to-face first-time interview based upon a person’s job history, education, skills, interests, special awards, and other types of things that generally are included on a resume. The HR guy or gal (or hiring manager) likely enjoys plowing through the resumes about as much as he or she likes being kicked in the eye. It’s about equal to how much you enjoyed regurgitating the boring facts onto the piece of paper(s) we call a resume in the first place.

Enter the resume cover letter. Resume cover letters are like a wonderful breath of fresh air. They have spirit, or should have at least. They are your key to the future. They get the job done. They get the job, period. These sometimes ingnored pieces of artwork are the sauce of who you are and what you represent as a person. They are the flexing of your resume muscle, as it were. Without actually promising to meet you in person yet, the hiring manager and boss can scrutinize a resume cover letter document and either attach your name in their brain with something favorable or something not so favorable. This is completely at the other end of the spectrum as it relates to what a resume can pull off sitting there all by itself with no hand to hold.

Resume cover letters are your saving grace because you can be the attention-getter—you can point out all of your great virtues to the employer without feeling self-conscious. You can hook the employer like you never knew, and you are about to learn how.

It’s your turn to get in on a resume cover letter writing “secret”, a an effective route to get you in the door. This is the whole point of the resume cover letter—yes, you get the resume read, but more significantly to get your hiney in front of the person who does the hiring. So, first remember that you will be meeting a person. That person has feelings, likes, dislikes, and you guessed it—a personality like you do. Rewind. Understanding that the hiring manager has a much in common with you, you can capitalize on that by—here’s the first part of the “secret”—discovering these things in advance. Face it, by and large networking is what lands jobs. This is your chance to do some resume “under”cover letter research to find out some interesting facts about the hiring manager and/or the potential future boss. You will see a bit later how this all ties into resume cover letters.

Do you know an employee that works at the establishment you want to be a part of? Does he or she know the HR guy or enough about him or the boss to spill some beans? These beans aren’t confidential beans, just beans that give you a better idea of who you will be dealing with and work habits and things like hobbies, interests, traits, etc. If you don’t know someone who works there, that’s okay. You can meet one of the employees casually at the place you want to work at if you have to. It’s about doing what it takes to know more than the next guy. “Bump” into an unintimidating employee on their way out of work on a Friday, and after you chat with them a very short while, find out if the CEO is a good boss to work for and some other relevant details about him. What is the corporate culture? What else can you think of to find out comfortably by asking or just looking around at the setting? You’re not doing anything wrong here, you are just being practical. Alter the detail-gathering to your comfort level. What do you find that is rare in the environment that the personnel would probably pride themselves on?

After your little visit you are all set to jot down some awesome spotlights in your resume cover letter. How will you fit in at the place you want to work? Imagine that you already work there (you have some knowledge already from conversations and observation). Huh? That is, what can you articulate in your cover letter that makes it sound like you will be the right choice for the job. What is it about you that particularly demonstrates that you are the perfect one for the job?

You have an advantage at this point. Now at the very beginning of the resume cover letter, and right before the final period of the cover letter, you can note something that will make the hiring manager all warm and fuzzy, and think, “This guy (or gal) will be great to meet. Sounds like the perfect fit.” Don’t overdo things, but in the very beginning of the cover letter point out a peculiarity/uniqueness that from your stopover shows you can “gel” with what the company has going for them. Independently, at the very conclusion, insert another smoking hot piece of information about why you could be just who they are looking for, based upon your field trip or observation/conversation(s). Impress them at the outset, and impress them after everything else. Everything else in the middle is icing about pertinent details found in your resume. Voila! Your chances just improved exceedingly by employing just a single little smoking hot snapshot “secret”.

Sometime in your life, you may decide that your present career is leading nowhere, or you could just be bored with doing the usual thing and feel that something better is waiting to be explored. Regardless of your reasons for making a change in your career, it’s critical to take things under consideration. 1. Pay Increase or Pay Cut : Will your career change lead to a pay increase or a pay cut? It’s critical to think about this option to plan for your financial position. If you have obligations or any repeated payments like a mortgage, vehicle payments, cell telephone bills, etc, you’d need to grasp that you’d still be in a position to afford these luxuries. 2. Location : would you like to have to move in order to make the career change? This is another query that you have got to take under consideration.

Some folks can move inside their firms to do different things, others may have to physically move to a new company to make the change. Due to a rise in gas costs, being found near your principal place of business is significant. If you’re close to your job, you can simply save on gas. 3. Finding the proper career : Have you done your research as to what career your need to change to? Did you know what will make you happy? Finding the proper career is crucial to being content and staying at a specific company. It is vital to discover a job that you’re going to enjoy ; or you will just finish up switching corporations or switching careers all over again. When asked the question “What’s more vital, the job or the money?” how would you answer? Four. Abilities : What abilities have you got that may be helpful to your new career? Most soft talents like communication and interpersonal skills will always be helpful to a company.

Any managerial abilities and technical talents will certainly help out also. Being in the 21st century, technical talents can definitely be helpful in just about each sort of career you’ll decide to change to. Five. Education, Coaching , and Authentications : Will your new career lead to more education and training? How much time and cash will it take to get to where you need to be? Like most roles, you learn by doing. But with other jobs, you could need to get more education, coaching, and authentications to get you to where you wish to be. With some careers, you could be ready to easily pick up on the daily activities, other careers you might need to get some pro coaching and / or authentications to get considered for the position. Whatever the case might be be certain to research what’s in requirement for that particular career. Six. Using your contacts / Networking : the very best way to find your new career is to utilize your contacts.

The people that you know might be the folk that can put in a good word for you or to offer you recommendation as to what you must do or what industry you must get into. Alternative routes to broaden your network is to join different setups or associations. If at all possible and available, go thru your alumni organisation. These are some beneficial tips for you to think about before switching careers. Always recall that the selections that you make can either break or make you. Be bold and take chances. If you’re disappointed with where you are at, be proactive about. Otherwise you will finish up asking yourself “what if…?” This way you can know that at least you attempted.

Any good job hunter needs a resume package. The cover letter and resume always go together and do the same basic thing in slightly different ways. A job hunter without both of them will probably not get very far in the search for a good career position.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what these crucial documents should do for you. The first part, the cover letter, is a short one page letter consisting of three or four paragraphs. It serves as an introduction to the resume. It is the part that will always be seen by the gatekeeper.

The second part is the resume itself. Many job hunters make the mistake of thinking they can just leave a resume without a cover letter. That is like putting on a suit and tie, but forgetting the shirt or the pants. They are a package and they go together.

The resume itself may be in either functional or chronological format. The functional format concentrates on skills. The chronological format concentrates on employment listings. The most effective resumes use elements of both formats to create a combination resume that gets results. It should be laid out in a graphically appealing style, with adequate use of white space, bullet points to draw attention to important parts, and conservative fonts used. While you will occasionally bold face or italicize a font to draw attention to a point or break up a large section of type, changing fonts often makes it hard to read, so stick with one basic font. Also never go smaller than ten point type, and if possible stick with twelve or eleven point. Those sizes are easier to read. If your cover letter and resume are in a small type and hard to read, they simply will not be read, and will not help you.

Many job seekers wonder how they should present the resume package to the decision maker. There are several acceptable methods. If mailing it, use a large nine by twelve white envelope to avoid folding your materials. The white envelopes look nicer than the tan manila commonly used in business. Also large envelopes are generally the first thing people open when they get their mail. If not the first then they may save the large envelope for last. Since people tend to remember the first and the last – the alpha and the omega – while forgetting much of what is in the middle, either first or last is a good thing.

If you are hand delivering your documents stop by an office supply shop and pick up a clear plastic folder with a pressure binder spine and place your cover letter and resume in it. It makes a great presentation and will complement it perfectly. Use these tools well and you are on your way.

Do you like video games? Do you beat video games after playing once? Do you feel like the games are too easy? Well, it sounds like you have a passion for these things then you should go where your heart leads you.

If you at the point where you are thinking about your career, I suggest that you do what you love to do. You should consider a different course of action: majoring in something you TRULY enjoy… something you could do hours on end without feeling like you are working at all. And if you are like many people, this ’something’ would be playing video games.

That’s right! You can actually get a job creating and/or playing video games. Below is a list of some of the careers available for those with a video game degree.

1) Video Game Programmer

Gameinformer Magazine mentions that, video game programmers are the “heart and soul” of the industry. They are the ones responsible for creating the code necessary for getting video games to function. And contrary to popular belief, their jobs aren’t always easy. Video game programming often involves creating complex functions and algorithms often times more challenging than programs created in Corporate America.

Indeed, game programming may not be the appropriate course for everyone seeking a video game career, but if you were deciding to go into the computer field anyway, which job would be more enjoyable… coding the next Halo, or working on a boring, hum-drum piece of no-name software?

2) Video Game Tester

As a video game tester it is a position in which you truly would get paid for playing video games. According to current game tester Doug D. from Electronic Arts, he say’s as a game tester you would “go over different components of a game and look for things that just don’t make sense.” You would also “break the game,” meaning you would “do things a normal user would do and accidentally see something go wrong.”

Doug Powell further adds that video game testing is a good place to start for young people who want to “break into the industry.” To get such a position in it is best to have a “passion for gaming” and some educational background. Doug recommends a degree, or some form of higher-level education.

3) Video Game Animator

Animators are in charge for coordinating the movement of video game characters. Accomplishing requires more than drawing something on a piece of paper, which according to Alex Jones, an established game animator, occurs after a lot of “brainstorming, chilling, playing, planning and testing” with the programmer. But when the busy work is done, the video game animator will finally get a chance to do what he or she does best… animate. Alex Drouin says the thing he liked best about his job was “being able to come there late in the morning, sit behind his computer, put on a great CD, and then create crazy animation that will end up in a game that will be seen all around the world by gamers.” With a video game degree it is certainly possible!

4) Sound Designer

Sound designers are responsible for creating the music and sound effects of video games. Video game music is created either from digital sources or real-life stimulation. As video game consoles become more advanced, many sound designers favor the latter when deciding on what type of music they want in the games they are working on. Creating appropriate sound effects, on the other hand, sometimes requires more creative experimentation.

To be successful at designing video game sounds it is best to: 1) have an interest in both music and sound, 2) possess knowledge of recording equipment and 3) be familiar with the types of music and sound used in today’s most popular video games. A video game degree will help develop these talents and skills.

5) Game Designer

Video game designers are responsible for creating the ‘experience’ of a particular game. Charles Perry, a video game designer, sums it up by saying “the main tasks of the designer is to make sure the game is fun.”

Wells further adds that game designers are responsible for macro and micro level design. Macro level design involves “figuring out the core mechanics of the game; the variety of level looks, power-ups, etc.” Micro-design involves creating the “actual levels and the moment-to-moment gameplay within those levels… the enemies, the objects, and the particular way you encounter those enemies and objects.”

Good game designers should obviously have an interest in video games along with some drawing and programming skills.

Your resume is a marketing tool that should effectively sell your skills, experience, and educational qualifications to prospective employers. When developing your resume, there are two different types of resume formats you should consider: a chronological resume and a functional resume. Your decision to choose one format over another should be dependent on your career background and personal circumstances. The ultimate decision will be based on that format that allows you to most effectively present your qualifications.

Chronological Resumes

Q. What is a chronological resume?

A. In a chronological resume format, your employment experience history is organized in reverse chronological order so that your most recent job position is listed first. This type of format emphasizes your job titles and employers, as well as your dates of employment with each employer. Your responsibilities and accomplishments should be described in detail for each individual position.

Q. What are the advantages to using a chronological resume?

A. Chronological resumes are easy to read, use a logical flow, and can effectively highlight career growth. Since this type of resume emphasizes the details of each position, using a chronological resume will draw attention to impressive titles and prestigious employers.

Q. What are the disadvantages to using a chronological resume?

A. Because of the format of a chronological resumes, this style easily undercover gaps in your employment history and frequent job changes. It also draws attention to the fact that you may be relative experienced in the workforce or in a particular career.

Q. What types of candidates should choose to use a chronological resume?

A. Chronological resumes are best suited for those individuals whose job history reflects steady career growth, those who are remaining in the same field, and those whose career goals are clearly defined and in alignment with their work history. This type of resume is also suitable for candidates who have prior employment with a prestigious employer that they want to highlight.

Functional Resumes

Q. What is a functional resume?

A. Functional resumes have often been referred to as problem solving resumes in that they allow you to organize your resume by functional skills as opposed to purely chronological order. This allows individuals to make sense of their work history by matching up skills and accomplishments from different jobs that might otherwise be overlooked by an employer in a more traditional chronological formatted resume. The goal is to highlight specific key qualifications which have been demonstrated through a variety of work-related achievements. As opposed to a chronological resume, skills do not have to be presented in the order of accomplished in a functional resume, but instead may be presented in order of importance and relevance to the job for which you are applying.

Q. What are the advantages to using a functional resume?

A. Using a functional resume keeps the emphasis on key relevant skills you possess that make you a good fit for a position. It allows candidates to align accomplishments from several different positions for a more powerful impact, since these skills might otherwise be lot in the shuffle in a traditional resume. Functional resumes also minimize the impact of inexperience in the workforce or field, frequent job changes, and any gaps in your employment history.

Q. What are the disadvantages to using a functional resume?

A. The presence of a clear career progression can easily be lost in a functional resume, as can extended experience in your targeted industry or field. Impressive employers or job titles are de-emphasized, which is a disadvantage if these are strong selling points in your experience. Additionally, some recruiters and managers dislike functional resumes due to their perceived lack of logical flow.

Q. What types of candidates should choose to use a functional resume?

A. A functional resume is a solid option for individuals who are looking to change careers, returning to the job market after a long absence, trying to minimize fair-to-average career growth. This format is also appropriate for new graduates, candidates with limited work experience, and individuals whose work history is a mixed bag of unrelated experience.

I don’t know if there are any concrete numbers on this topic but if I had to guess I would say that less than 25% of people like their jobs. Most people continue to go to work because they feel they have no other options. They are either lacking in the educational background to improve their situation or maybe they have overextended themselves financially and they have to keep working at a job they hate to support their lifestyle.

Whatever the reason is that you continue to work at a job you hate I am here to tell you there are other options. The internet is continuing to become more and more a part of people’s lives. Older people, that are technologically challenged, are even finding their way on-line. It would make sense that the growing popularity of the internet would lead to career opportunities for people. After all, if someone is buying from the internet than someone has to give that person an avenue to make their purchase.

This is where the article gets to the point if you haven’t already figured it out. You can begin your own internet business for much less than if you were to open a store selling the same products. You don’t need liability insurance for slip and fall accidents, no worker’s compensation insurance for employees needed to man the store, etc… For an internet business you need a decent computer and preferably a quick internet connection, otherwise you’d go nuts waiting for the slow dial-up services.

Because the internet is relatively new, meaning within the last 15 to 20 years or so, not many people grew up thinking they want an internet business when they grew up. At the same time, people do not even consider it now that they are old enough to work. If you really think about it you are being held down by your employer, if you don’t like your job that is. You dread going to work. You painfully make it through each day. By the time you get home you are too emotionally drained to even think about changing your career. When you finally do consider it, it is only because things have gotten so bad at work you just need to get out the door.

The problem with this situation is that you end up going from one bad situation to another because you don’t think clearly when the offer comes. You are so desperate to get out the door of the current company anything looks good.

I went to college and got my bachelor’s degree. I have completed half of an MBA program. While in the MBA program I questioned why I was doing this. The degree would only allow me to get a higher paying job I hate, where I still need to deal with corporate politics. As I write this article it is 70 degrees outside, which is good for April in Massachusetts. I spent the whole day playing outside with my 2 year old daughter. This kind of time spent with my daughter is possible because I made the change and now live off the internet.

You can do it too!

I was skeptical to make the leap to the internet too. One thing I read since I started my quest to live off the internet was, “If you continue to do what you have always done you will continue to get the results you have always gotten.” It just made so much sense to me and I live by that saying now. I went to college because I wanted to build a good life for myself. At 18 years old I saw my father get laid off from the company he was with for 25 years. I didn’t want that to happen to me and I thought a degree would prevent it. Well, I was let go from my company after 4 ½ years.

I am tired of getting up everyday hating my job. I am tired of being controlled by a company that could care less about me. So, I am doing something different than I have always done, hoping for different results than I have always gotten.

What is preventing you from doing the same thing? It is estimated that 500 million websites will be created between now and 2010. By getting your foot in the door now you are giving yourself the ability to become established before the levels of competition make it difficult to be successful.

My article is not designed to trick you into an MLM program. (multi-level marketing) I am personally against those. I am talking about affiliate and reseller programs. I personally participate in both and have success with both. I would normally give a few examples in my articles but the rules of most sites prevent affiliate links in articles. If you want to learn more do a search on your favorite search engine or feel free to contact me directly using the email address in my profile below. I would be happy to spend the time to help you pick the program best for you.

If you made it through this article there is a good chance you are looking for a way out of your current employment situation, or you need employment. The best part of this whole thing is you can do it part-time to start so you can keep your job until you establish a level of income you are comfortable with. I hope this article has given you the encouragement to take the chance and go for it. You deserve better, we all do.

Searching for a job can be difficult enough, but when you finally spot the ‘job of a lifetime’ – just consider that if the job sounds too good to be true – quite likely, it is!

Imagine the job of “Designer – Developer/Applications/IT” with a tax-free salary of $120K for 6 months work.

Perks including Paid Overtime at $300 per hour, paid first-class accommodation, $3,000.00 flat rate travel/entertainment allowance for every intercontinental trip, free comprehensive healthcare, two weeks of paid vacation, a free laptop computer and free transportation/vehicle.

WOW!!! – Where do I sign up???

This is just one of the many recent postings on Monster.com – other jobs with the same salary and benefits are also available – including:

* Project Manager – Project/Infrastructure/IT
* Analyst – Systems/Support/IT
* Technical Advisor – Computer/Security/IT
* Analyst – Data Manager/IT/

Sometimes the scams are easy to spot – other times it can be more difficult. Quite often the job titles and job descriptions are often stolen from other legitimate employment sites.

You may be able to enter a snippet of the job description in double-quotes and find the original source through your favorite search engine.

For example, the position I mentioned earlier contained the text “(C++, Java, HTML, PHP, Visual Basic)” in the job description.

Search for this in Google (including the double-quotes) and you’ll quickly see how often this exact string has been used in scam-related job postings.

These companies (more likely individuals) have absolutely no intention of hiring you – they are simply after the “Administration Fee” you need to send in advance.

Here is an example of some terms on a recent posting on monster.com:

You are liable to make charges of about USD$950.00 for the procurement of your working and residential permit documents which covers:

1, Administrative charges:
2, Diplomatic Courier Charges:
3, Working Permit charges:
4, Residential Permit charges:
5, Hard copies of the terms:

They promise reimbursement of fees and travel expenses to attend the interview, but only AFTER you’ve shown up for the job and discovered they never existed!

In addition to money sent to the fraudsters in advance — you could be suckered in for airfare, hotel and thousands of dollars in other expenses.

Some obvious clues that should send up bright red warning flags:

* The job is in Nigeria, or posted on behalf of a Nigerian company. Quite often the jobs are IT-related in companies involved with oil, banking or mining.

* The contact is using @hotmail.com or some other free email service. Legitimate offers generally come from legitimate companies with real email addresses.

* The telephone number is a fake. Don’t even try to call. Most often, if the number even works at all, it leads to a mobile phone in Nigeria or a similar country. Check the country code before calling and see if it matches the company’s address (if they even provide one).

* Beware of requests for detailed personal information, such as a copy of your passport, birth certificate, SSN card and so forth. This trick is used to make the application more ‘real’ but if they can’t sucker you on the ‘application fee’ – they may just sell or use your identity instead.

* Quite often, there will be many errors in the references, spelling and/or grammar. Here is another example:

“You are to receive the hard copies of the contract terms and agreement and also your working and residential permit altogether, it will be delivered through Diplomatic Courier Services(DHL) to your various designated addresses respectively.”

Do a Google search for “Diplomatic Courier Services(DHL)” and you will again see dozens of listings discussing or exposing the scam.

There are many variations to this new type of scam. Currently, IT professionals seem to be the major target. Monster.com and Monster’s country-specific sites have become the hot target for these scamsters.

Although Monster does remove bogus job postings fairly quickly, the process to complain about them is difficult and time-consuming.

In many online job boards, there is no ‘filtering’ or human review process for job postings — otherwise such fraudulent listings would be need to be much more difficult. Many job boards also allow free postings for advertisers — making them even more attractive for scammers.

The important thing to remember is that few legitimate employers will ask for fees of any kind up-front – in fact, many employers will pay for your travel expenses in advance.

Don’t let the job of your dreams become a financial nightmare – be cautious when dealing with any business you can not easily identify or verify. Best of luck on your job search!

How to write a thank you letter to use after an interview, a phone interview, or even to someone who passed your name on to a hiring manager is an art that is not taught as often as it should be by placement services and others who help job seekers with finding jobs. They always cover the basics of resume writing, interview preparation, cover letter writing, how to create a reference sheet, and even how to prepare a salary history, which isn’t even required that often, but how to write a thank you letter is a subject that should be covered. It is a necessary skill that puts the capstone on the interview or other contact you had, makes you appear to be thoughtful and intelligent, and puts you above the crowd.

Some hiring managers are so swamped with resumes and cover letters when they post a listing on an online job bank or run a newspaper classified ad that they look for reasons to discard resumes. Having five hundred resumes in your email in box can be quite intimidating. Some hiring managers have been known to send out an automated response to all applicants letting them know that the resume was received. They will then sit back and wait for further communication. If an applicant knows how to write a thank you letter they have a jump on the competition immediately.

How to do it? As in all formal correspondence it should be block formatted with proper spelling, addresses and salutations. Keep it short—two or three paragraphs. In the first paragraph express your primary purpose by thanking the person you are writing to for their time and consideration. Business people are busy and time is a valuable commodity. In the second paragraph restate one or two key job skills you can bring to the position. Remind the reader as to why you are a good candidate for the job. In the third paragraph, thank the reader again, and reiterate that you are available by phone, email or in person should they have further questions. End with the traditional business ending “sincerely yours”.

An example of how knowing how to write it occurred with one job seeker a few years ago at a business brokerage in the Midwest. This job seeker was already working as a part-time telemarketer. She was competing for a full-time office manager position against two other. One of the men had a bachelors degree and the other was about to receive her bachelors. Both had several more years experience in office administration Obviously the other candidates were more qualified than the first applicant, but she knew how to write a thank you letter, and proved it. After her interview with the company owner, the managing broker and the old office manager (who was retiring and helping choose her own replacement) the fist candidate composed a thank you letter. She then printed out individualized copies for each person she interviewed with mailed them that evening. When the interviewers received them the next day they were impressed with her thoughtfulness and adherence to protocol. Despite the fact that the other two applicants were more qualified, she was hired. The fact that she knew how to write one probably got her the job she was seeking.

Many hiring managers will interview multiple candidates and only hire from those who send thank you letters. Some studies have shown that only one in ten applicants see the importance of thank you letters, so it should be obvious that if you know how to write a thank you letter you have a very important job skill.
