Accounting Jobs Revealed
God bless the accountants. They don’t get the love they deserve from most of us, but where would we be without them?
They make sure you know where your money is going.
They make sure you know where your money is coming from.
They make sure taxes are paid, so that you don’t pay in jail-time.
They make sure we balance our books.
Can you say “bankruptcy”? Well, thanks to your accountant, you won’t have to.
You rely on accountants for keeping track of an organization or an individual’s money. Typically they prepare reports that will be used to determine how you are faring financially. Accountants also prepare tax reports for organizations and individuals.
Before you rush to an accountant resume writer to get your very own accounting resume written, you should inform yourself on what an accountant needs to do.
First, an accountant needs to be able to count. Yes, I know it goes without saying, but so does paying down one’s credit card on time…which explains why nobody ever gets into debt.
Second, be prepared to become very familiar with your chair. In some cases, salaried accountants will have to travel, especially those with an auditing role at a public or government level
Third, remember that taxes are well known to be Hell for most people but for accountants they are your meal ticket. But tax season is still Hell – the busiest time of the year.
THREE KINDS OF ACCOUNTANTS
Public Accountants
Public Accountants generally work for accounting firms, whether it is through a major accounting practice of their own start-up company. Most of their clients are folks like you and me, but small and medium sized businesses also use their services.
A Public Accountant can be a financial Jack-of-all-trades, balancing a number of roles, such as accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting roles.
Management Accountants
Management Accountants are usually in house employees that who track the flow of money for the companies they work for. They typically fill a number of roles, such as preparing financial reports for the company, financial scenarios for management and, of course, tax forms for the Government .
Government Accountants
Government Accountants work for – can you guess? – the government. Their role is to make sure that your tax dollars are not being wasted (at least, not unnecessarily). They may also help to keep track of financial transactions of individuals and organizations who do ongoing business with the government.
ACCOUNTING JOB MARKET
This is all well and good, but what do your job prospects look like? According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008 there were 1.3 million accountants. Over the seven upcoming years employment for accountants is expected to grow faster than all other careers they track.
Even better, you would make a yearly salary of $65,840. OK, so that is in fact what the average accountant was making in 2008. Surely that is higher by now.
It does take more than just presenting a resume to some recruiters to work as an accountant. Most accountants have a college degree in accounting and public accountants are required to pass an accreditation test in order to earn their certification, as well as be licensed in the state in which they are employed.
Once you are license, an accounting career can be a very rewarding choice with a stable future.

Are You Lazy At Work? Perception Is Everything.
Your work reputation may be damaged by the perception that you are Lazy This can be damaging to your next promotion and to your future career aspirations. As you may know, people will form an opinion of you based on a number of factors, some of, which are not factual but unfortunately they tend to relay that opinion to others through subtle language indicators that can be damaging to your reputation.
Here is an example of how this might work. A manager asks an executive assistant if his expense claim has been processed and the assistant says, I put it on VP’s desk last week, but you know that’s like sending it to a “black hole”..I will follow up with him later today. Later that same day at a Manager’s meeting everyone is grumbling about their expense cheques and you hear another manager say that the assistant completed them and sent them to the “black hole”..this propagates a negative message about the VP that is not necessarily true. For example the assistant may have put the expenses on the VP’s desk at 3 pm, after the VP already left the office for a week-long conference.
Take a minute to consider if any of these pitfalls apply to you and make sure to avoid them.
•Pay attention to where you sit in the office and who can see you as well as who can see your computer screen. Assume that everyone is watching you and that everything you do is monitored by someone. It doesn’t matter what your position is in the company. Sometimes the most damage is done by those in the lower echelons. Today’s popular mobile work environment is deliberately engineered to deprive employees of privacy. Every detail of how you work contributes to your reputation.
Here are a few visuals to watch out for;
-slouching, leaning way back in your chair or using your arm to prop your head
-talking loudly so that others can hear you, making too many personal calls, having negative phone conversations within earshot of others
-surfing the net for personal reasons or using the company system for personal reasons
-getting for coffee or bathroom breaks too often
-chatting too much around the office (although a certain amount of chatting is often beneficial to build relationships)
-having a dirty coffee cup on your desk for days..or having several coffee cups on your desk at once
-having an overloaded inbox that never appears to be cleared
-having too much clutter on your desk
-these days smoking has a negative stigma attached to it and if you are out having a smoke break several times a day, it could be frowned upon as just a reason for more breaks
-not bring the proper paperwork to meetings. For example not bringing the agenda and having to ask others for it.
These are just few things that get noticed in the office and that you can manage to your advantage.
Company cultures are all different and not all of the above may apply to all situations but at least be aware of some of your habits that may be contributing to a negative or lazy image of you.
•How you handle email is another significant contributor to your reputation and it can be deadly because it’s forever in writing. If you consistently slough off work to others that you should be doing, or if you are constantly apologizing for not getting things done, then you can be sure that people are noticing. This is when, it pays to go speak to person face to face as opposed to putting it in writing. If you don’t respond to emails in a timely way, it will also be noticed. Pay close attention to who get’s copied in on your emails. If your emails are copied to your supervisor or other parties you should always ask yourself why? Often the message is that you are not handling the matter satisfactorily.
•Progress reporting at meetings is another common way that people form opinions on your work. Often, the people around the table have no involvement in your work and yet they will be listening to your reporting with keen interest. If you repeatedly use the same excuses for why work is not progressing, you may soon get a reputation for being a slacker. In particular, be careful not to blame other people for holding up your work. This excuse is dangerous for multiple reasons and will come back to harm you.
•Procrastinating is a pitfall that can creep up at anytime. It often occurs as a result of being overwhelmed by an issue (or the volume of issues) or just not knowing clearly how to tackle an issue. It can also be tied to human personalities that are prone to avoiding unpleasant or difficult situations. Procrastination manifests itself in various ways. Some common examples are not starting work/projects at all, not returning phone calls or emails in a timely way or at all and attempting to delegate inappropriately. Procrastination can become chronic and ultimately wear away at your self-confidence and therefore leads to more frequent procrastination. Unfortunately, this is often perceived as laziness. If you find yourself procrastinating there are ways to deal with it which we cover off in the Don’t Allow Procrastination To Kill Your Career.
•Not following through on your commitments will most definitely register in people’s minds as laziness. You should get in the habit of managing your commitments carefully and, in particular, take the extra time to assess whether you’re the right person for the job and how much time is required in the context of your schedule. It’s always best to under-promise and over-deliver. Once you say that you will do something, the expectation will be there that you will follow through. Very common examples of this pitfall occurs at meetings when people promise to undertake tasks without proper appreciation for what’s involved. A good self preservation policy is to always ask three questions before promising to do anything. The first is what are the details of the deliverables the second is what are the benefit of completing this task (i.e. why are we doing this) and the third is what is the timing requirement. Often at meetings tasks are randomly assigned that require great time commitments and have little benefit. A classic example is being asked to prepare reports that may be interesting but have no real value. So manage the expectation strategically and to your advantage because once you commit, your reputation is immediately put on the line.
Success in your career depends greatly on reputation at work is hard to change once its solidified in people’s minds so it’s important to manage your behaviors according to how you want to be perceived.
